The digital age means digital communications and direct messaging are now the standard for small and medium-sized businesses wanting to truly connect and engage with their customers
Small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) of all disciplines are capitalising on digital solutions to improve their operations. Bookkeepers are a major part of that ecosystem, both as SMB’s themselves and as they service other SMBs.
As the world transitions away from paper-based to digital record-keeping, the need for streamlined and secure communications surrounding financial details of a business’s activities is paramount.
To foster a digital strategy of enhanced engagement, bookkeepers must use innovative services solutions that engage customers and cut through the noise within the digital marketplace.
Data-driven digital engagement
Australia’s Institute of Certified Bookkeepers credits the key driver of change within the industry to rapid digitisation.
Of the 2.2 million businesses in Australia, with approximately 300,000 new starting every year. 92% have IT of some type which is used for varying business processes.
Based on the above survey stats, it’s clear that the bookkeeping business process is heavily intertwined with the cloud.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) illustrates the intentions and expectations of 776k domestic businesses surveyed in the ABS’ ‘Digital First’ survey.
‘Digital First’ is the concept of having open access to a business’ records of transactions each day, every day, by using digital tools to streamline the process of bookkeeping.
The Digital First Survey found:
- 91.9% of businesses have internet access.
- 44.6% of businesses have a web presence.
- 55.3% of businesses have placed orders online.
- 27.8% of businesses have received orders online.
- (AUD) $237b worth of sales were generated online.
Businesses that use IT do so for the following reasons:
- 86% of businesses used IT for accounting.
- 52% for production or service operations.
- 76% for invoicing.
- 32% for stock control.

The current wave of technology developments is great for business and for bookkeepers.
