The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) SMS Sender ID Register is now open for applications, with the 1 July 2026 enforcement date fast approaching.

How the SMS Sender ID Register Works
The SMS Sender ID Register is a national verification framework designed to prevent sender ID spoofing, a tactic commonly used in SMS scams where fraudulent messages are made to appear as though they come from trusted brands.
Under the Register, organisations must formally register the Sender IDs they use to send SMS to Australian mobile numbers. Only verified, authorised businesses can use specific Sender IDs, giving recipients greater confidence that the messages they receive are legitimate.
Does This Apply to You?
If your Whispir messages arrive with a brand name, product name, or organisation name rather than a mobile number — that’s a Sender ID, and it will need to be registered.
This applies regardless of where your organisation is based. Australian and overseas organisations sending SMS to Australian mobile numbers are both covered by the new requirements.
What the July 2026 Deadline Means in Practice
From 1 July 2026, SMS sent using an unregistered Sender ID will be displayed to recipients as “Unverified.” For organisations using Whispir for customer notifications, authentication messages, or service updates, that label carries real implications for how your messages are received and trusted.
Registration applications have been open since 30 November 2025, so there’s no need to wait.

What You Need to Do
The starting point is the same for every organisation:
- Identify which Sender IDs you’re currently using for SMS to Australian mobile numbers via Whispir
- Determine which of those fall under the registration requirement
- Register them ahead of the 1 July 2026 deadline
From there, the process depends on your organisation’s structure. Entities with an Australian Business Number (ABN) can register directly with ACMA or through an approved participating or certified telecommunications provider. Organisations without an ABN will need to register through an approved certified provider on their behalf.
